Imagine the lights go out, never to return. Bright aurora flare across the sky, and all humanity’s technological might is laid to waste, neutralized in a kind of quiet apocalypse. Everything that has shielded humanity from the disinterested power of Mother Nature is suddenly wrenched from us, dropping us a few links down the food chain. Food and water are scarce. The roads are no longer safe. And winter approaches…

Zed wasn't quite sure where he was at anymore. for the longest time, all he cared to know about where he was going was which way was east. it was the last direction he and his mother were supposed to be heading together. but that was a long, long time ago- at least, that's how it seemed. the days and nights kind of blurred together at times, and they were probably miles separated, but still he hoped at least heading for the coast, he'd find his way back to her.
that was, he had no clue exactly how far north he was, and honestly wasn't expecting part of the water to be frozen over here. it made him question just how thick that ice was. still, he could see a hint of an island through the fog with maybe a house, and it would be getting dark soon. as he looked out across the expanse of ice, he gave a dry swallow, holding his gun close. he had to go across.
he was careful on the ice at first, testing it, shifting his weight slowly as he became more confident with how the ice felt. then probably a little more than halfway across, he heard slight crackles, the ice wasn't really breaking, just creaking- but it spooked zed all the same, and so he hurried his pace a little. being almost at the other side, he was a little premature with a celebratory hoot as he slipped at the very edge. in just a moment his feet vanished from beneath him, and he was crashing down on his back- his backpack cushioned most of it, but the back of his head thwacked against the ice.
"Fuck me!" he cried out as he cringed, holding his head. while his first thought should be to get off of the ice, he was too preoccupied, considering he was seeing stars from that hit.

In truth, Lucien probably shouldn't have been out. A wise man would have been resting. However, he was neither wise nor likely to live much longer. He'd taken it on himself to protect the kid he'd adopted, even if that adoption had been rather unofficial, and that in his mind meant food. So after knocking back more pain killers then he should he'd headed out. He had one thought in his mind and that was to find the bear he'd shot. It'd be a vital source of meat, fur and would give him some glee to butcher it. Some dark twisted glee. Breath was coming in puffs of steam ahead of him and he stumbled and slipped his way along the trail, finally ending on the ice.
It was there he'd lost the trail, and his brain was too fogged with cold and the pain meds to focus enough on the threat that would normally have had him changing his mind from both the howl of wolves in the fog or the roar of a bear. Instead, he kept stumbling on, his thought only broken by a thud. The 'fuck me' reassured his brain that it was at least human. For a while he started moving in that direction, coming close to the fallen Zed, before at random he moved off in a separate direction.
He'd been drawn towards what sounded like an epic conflict on the frozen ocean. The howls and yelps and yips of fighting wolves, occasionally drowned by the deep bass bellowing roar of a bear. Not that he was aware fully of what was happening, it was the bear's roars and chuffs that had attracted his brains' addled attention. His mind had decided that it was 'his' bear. Had decided he had to be the one to kill it, not them wolves.
"I'll kill you all!" his voice was hoarse, teeth chattering, a strange sense of warmth flooding his frozen body.

Zed lied there for several moments in a daze. he'd definitely be feeling that in the morning, if he lived to see the dawn. as he started coming back to the world around him, he noticed some odd noises that he didn't quite pick up before. grunting, yelling?
yes, he heard it, it sounded like another man, he seemed nearby by the sound of it, but at the moment, he couldn't see straight, let alone through the fog. he slowly worked himself to his feet.
"you alright...?" he said to seemingly no one but himself. after a few moments, he felt steadier, starting to recover from that hit.
"yeah, you're fine." he said, just as he realized the grunts seemed louder- and... not very human at all. he spun around, finally seeing the massive sillouette in the fog- a bear, and it was close.
his mind began a rapid fire of shock and panic as he whirled around for his gun, which had gone god knows where when he fell, and he didn't have time to look for it. he could run, but god knows this close a bear would outrun him anyday.
He had to make a decision... it was the bear, or him. there was no hesitation as he reached back for the large wood stick jutting out of his backpack, pulling out an axe- a double bit Michigan with a 36 inch handle. just as he saw the bear's nasty maw come into sight, bearing teeth in a bellowing roar, he returned with a warcry of his own.
"AAAYEYEYEYEYEYEYEYEEEEEE!!!!" he gave no hesitation running at the bear with all he had, not giving it a single moment to prepare or react, if he did, he was already done for, he'd have to make his swing count. the axe arched back over his head, as he brought it down suddenly.
blood splattered on his face as the axe cleaved deep, and the bear was silenced immediately. it took a slight wiggle to dislodge the axe from the beast's skull. immediately after he let out a rather disturbing laugh.
"YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME?" he shouted towards the wolves, swinging about the still bloodied axe, if only to keep them at bay. "COME GET IT!"
As the great bear fell it triggered a chain reaction. Most of the wolves chose to flee from the crazed axe wielder, however one fell from blood loss from the bear's own fight back against them - crushing a rabbit underneath it - and another in its eagerness to get away spooked a deer that fell through thin ice. It's crash and desperate bellowing struggles are all you can hear though as the fog thickened. The sunset was a strange pink orange seemingly making the sky appear like it was on fire.

Lucien was still meandering on the ice, finally ending up sitting down. On the ice. Rather unconcerned that he was sat on the ice. "Shouldn' there be a fire or somethin'?" in his mind he was sure he was back at the cabin on Misanthrope. "Say, Kid, you'll probably not answer but didn't I start a fire? 'm sure I did..." he frowned.
"Wha's a bear doin in here anyway? Did someone leave the cabin door open? Should kil..oh..." he frowned again. "I din' know you knew how t'use an axe like that... good hit... is the cabin door open?" he frowned more. "'m sure I was doin somethin..." he blinked again rubbin his eyes.
"Hey this ain't the cabin...what 'm I doin' outside?" yep he had no recollection on deciding to go outside.

As he finally regained his composure after swinging his axe about like a madman, he examined the area and how it seemed to have changed so quickly. another thicker fog was rolling in, which was no surprise considering it was sunset and the heat around here would be dropping fast.
in the immediate area around him though, things seemed to be dropping like flies- first, the bear that died by his own hand, and then a wolf that died by the bear's hand- as he approached the wolf and rolled it over,he made another discover of a rabbit that had died by the wolf's hands... a domino effect that certainly couldn't be a coincidence.
that was a thing about zed, how often he was the luckiest unlucky person ever- considering had he not slipped, he wouldn't be cornered by the bear, none of this would've happened...
what snapped him from his thoughts was the sound of the ice breaking nearby, and bellows from a deer. so it sounded like one broke through- and zed's worry of thin ice wasn't paranoia, after all... though, before he could do anything about that, there was....
a man, sitting on the ice, and seemingly tripping balls. judging by the rifle in his hand, he was probably out here trying to hunt- emphasis on try, because in his state it didn't look like he would've succeeded- in fact, he probably would've died had zed not found him. he literally just looks like he was mauled by a bear- .... oh, now things were starting to make sense.
"yer ass gon get wet sittin there." he stated plainly, but honestly didn't expect much of a response. he seemed really inebriated, as he got closer, he knelt down and examined the man. he was familiar with the look of his eyes, he'd certainly overdone it on painkillers of some kind.
"oh yeah, yer not looking good. let's put the gun down, hm? the bear's dealt with, wolves gone. i don't need ya shooting me." he seemed to lull the gun from the man easily enough, laying it beside him. with that, he went to shamelessly looking through the stranger's bag. the first thing he was looking for was the bottle that possibly contained what he had taken.
"what the.... Damn, he really is tripping. this is practically heroin in pill form." he scoffed as he put the bottle back, instead pulling out a rope- ooh, useful... "some people... they act like throwing on bandages and popping painkillers will magically heal them...
Yer not at your cabin, you're out on the ice- well, at the bank anyhow. judging by your health, you wandered out here in a daze of confusion, and you... probably aren't even hearing me- well, i'll be borrowing this, mmkay? be right back."
yeah, pretty shameless, but he was kinda in a hurry. a deer could last a few minutes in the water before their coat gets soaked. he uncoiled the rope, walking along the bank as he followed the bellows. he found a tree towards the edge that seemed sturdy enough, before he headed out on that ice. he also took the risk in stripping down some, taking off his coat and sweater, nothing but a t-shirt in the brisk cold. he hung his backpack and clothes on the tree, then leading out with the rope. he shuffled carefully on the ice as he had before, a bit braver this time as he approached the deer. as it came into sight, zed marveled at the size of the stag, and then noticing the battle-scars, reddened antler tips on his massive rack showed he'd gored one or two foe in his past. zed knew it was a deer apart from the rest- a survivor, just down on his luck. zed prepared the rope, tying a lasso like he'd done it a thousand times before (because he had) and began to slowly creep forward on the ice.
"shhh, buddy... i ain't gon hurt ya." he spoke softly to the deer as he came closer. he heard the ice crackle under his feet, which was his signal that he was getting a little close for comfort- it'd be harder to get the lasso out there and loop him, but as he got it spinning with a twirl of the wrist, he cast it out, hoping for the best.
"aha, bullseye..." he celebrated quietly, seeing he'd gotten a good hold on the deer by his antlers. with a little tug, he helped the stag get his front hooves above the ice. he took a little risk, getting closer for a moment to help heft the deer out of the water. more of the ice began to crack, it was ready to give at any moment, so he'd have no choice but to practically wrestle the deer to follow him. taking hold of his right antler and underside of his front leg to lead it along in a brisk shuffle back to the tree. this deer could react many ways, zed was all too prepared to defend himself if this deer went fight vs flight... but it didn't, rather it seemed as if it was just calming down and getting his bearings back after being in that cold water. zed felt the deer knew he was helping it. they're very smart, emotional creatures after all.
as they were back to safety, zed just gave calm strokes down its neck. "it's ok bud, you're safe now." he repeated softly. "you're a real fighter. hang in there a bit longer, hm? i'll get you somewhere warm." he stripped off his semi-wet shirt, throwing it over the deer's back, sorta to help dry him, while he put his dry, warmer clothes back on. his pants hadn't got too wet, thankfully, and his boots were practically waterproof (plus side of gator hide). he took his bag of grits out of his backpack, putting a handful into his palm and offering it to the stag. zed preferred them softened, but he knew deer liked them plain just as well. "want some food? come follow me." he still had the rope, in fact untying it from the tree at the moment as he secured a bit around the deer's neck, loosely, so he could feed it and lead it slightly, walking him back along the bank towards lucien, and the now dead bear. he knew the wolves could come back, so he reclaimed his axe from off the ice- and oh, there his rifle was, it seemed fine as he looped it back over his shoulder. before the deer got any wise ideas, zed wanted to secure the rope to something secure- and why not? the bear. he slid it under the bear's front legs, tying a loop around the bear, so now if the deer decided to bolt, he'd be majorly slowed by the massive bear- and should the deer be friendly enough, hell they could use the 'horse'power to get that big bear back to somewhere safe.
now that he was back with the man, he knelt down in front of him once more.
"so, you said you got a cabin? show me where, if you can remember where you're at. you said you had a fire?" well that means there'd be signs of smoke, from a chimney probably, so he'd scan the sky for a smoke pillar, noting the beautiful hazy fire the sky seemed to be blazing right now. "if ya can, carry this rabbit. i can heft this wolf, and deer-bud and i can tug along the bear, if he can co-operate." he held up the bag of grits towards the deer. "more grits for you if ya help... i'm gonna call you wolfsbane. i'm zedekiah, by the way, zed fer short." he seemed to introduce himself to both the deer and the man at once.

Lucien nodded awkwardly getting to his feet. He was quite happy to help by carrying a rabbit. Before he frowned. Wait that would mean he'd not be able to carry his rifle. Where was it anyway? "rifle?" he asked almost dumbly. Okay maybe not rifle yet. He only had one good hand after all. He hobbled over to the rabbit picking it up "I can carry the wolf too?" he offered. It was true. As long as someone helped him get it slung over his shoulders.
"Maybe rifle? Use as a stick?" it was true he'd trouble to get himself back up onto jack rabbit island. The hill was rather steep up. Still he didn't really wait for any responses to the questions scanning finding a landmark that looked about right. Equally slowly he started to hobble off towards it.
Never the less with the slowness of his pace and the way he was having to pause the painkillers somewhat starting to wear off. At least to the point he was regaining his sobriety. Night was starting to fall as they finally got onto the last bit of the slope up to the cabin and he leant against the tree panting for breath.
"'s just there... hope the cabin ain't burnt down.." he didn't normally leave a fire burning. At least not an open one. Banked up embers yeh... but not a fire...fire.

the man didn't seem to be in a good way at all. zed could totally see why he was doped up on painkillers, seeing both the splints on his feet- given the circumstance zed should probably be carrying this man back to his house, not letting him walk... but considering he got out here by himself, he could probably manage to get back. he got the rabbit, and offered to carry the wolf, but zed would decline the offer.
"er, i think i can handle the wolf- and uh, ive got yer rifle fer ya, don't worry. you look to be in tough shape, y'should probably take it easy." at least now he seemed a bit more coherent. was he starting to come out of it?
as he started to turn off and hobble in a direction, zed figured he was starting to... but not yet. he was a bit wary, just in case- at least he wasn't armed, so there wasn't much harm he could do. when he asked for something to walk with, zed got him a sturdy stick. "best not to damage yer gun walking with it."
Well, Zed figured the man was leading back towards the cabin, there was the question of whether the deer wanted to be involved, and rather than running or attacking, Wolfbane seemed pretty calm. in fact, zed noticed casual deer behavior, just pawing at the snow looking for something to eat- wait, what did he have there?
"hey, rosehips. nice find, bud.." he leaned down where the stag had been digging, seeing as he'd uncovered a bush. he picked some, and let him have another little bit of grits instead. he'd probably have to raid another store for more, BUT it was worth it for a deer friend. and it seemed to be working. the deer wanted to follow them, even with the strain of the bear, the two followed along the way lucien showed them- needless to say, with their haul they matched the pace of the hobbling man. zed noticed over time his hobbling becoming a bit more strained- now he was sure it was starting to wear off, just as the man took a break against a tree.
"mmkay, yer not going any further... not on foot, anyhow... i have an idea, why dont ya climb onto the back of that bear? it'd be like a sled, pretty warm too. Bane and i can handle things from here." it seems they'd be arriving just in time, the sun was sinking below the horizon and dusk soon taking hold.
"fuck me..." he muttered to himself, a bit of hesitance and fear in his voice. he didn't like the night too much, and didn't look like he'd be making it back to his own 'temporary home' tonight- it was probably best to stay with this stranger... which he still wasn't quite sure of. other than their brief interaction, he had no clue what this man was like... but he knew the man needed taken care of and he wasn't doing so properly himself, that was zed's main concern.

As night finally fell the cabin was revealed the fog actually lifting. Lucien had glanced back to the strange grouping following him before he shook his head stubbornly. "I been hauled back in here once," he stated. He could only assume he'd been dragged back up after the initial mauling. "'n we're nearly there anyway," he was trying to ignore that the hunter in him was going 'kill the damn deer already'.
Slowly he hobbled a few more paces forward his jaw set in a determined 'I'll get meself there if it kills me' expression slumping against the front door of the thankfully intact cabin. It had taken a while longer for him to get there but he'd made it. And there were no fire, well no fire out of the hearth at least.
"'s here where home is... risked my ass to save one person, who I think'll still be 'ere at least..." he managed to get out before he pushed the door open, stumbling his way in and glancing about. He knew he should probably dress the kill as well but time. He dropped the rabbit down near the front door hobbling about trying to find the rest of the painkillers, and finding the first aid box instead that he'd left in the kitchen.

Seeing as the man was stubborn enough to push on even with his injuries, zed wouldn't stop him, figuring it'd be a futile effort, and he just wanted inside. once they were to the cabin, zed untied wolfbane from the bear, and for once since their meeting, zed removed the rope from the stag, he wasn't sure if the deer would stay, most likely it would run- but instead he stayed, nudging zed's backpack as that's where it knew the grits were. of course, the only thought on this animal's mind was food... but at least it recognized that much- why leave when this creature will feed me, take care of me?
"stay close, ok bud?" he patted the deer on its side. with the combination of his shirt drying it's back and just the natural water-resistance of the deer's fur, the most of the water had dripped off of him, his wounds didn't seem serious in the slightest, he'd be fine as long as no wolves showed up through the night. zed would make sure of that, keeping a close ear at the door.
how difficult that would be while dealing with this man, zed had no clue. he doubted it would be easy, considering his stubborn streak so far. it wasn't usually zed's way to walk into someone's house and start ordering them around, but something in him found this man at an exception, making one foolish decision after another.
"if i don't keep him alive, who will?" he muttered to the deer with a grin before following the man inside. he gave the room a quick scan setting down the wolf near the rabbit, taking his backpack off and setting it down near the fireplace. it was still burning a little, and the inside was well warmer than the outside. the first thing he did once getting inside was get undressed, stripping down to just his socks and longjohns for the moment, setting the rest of his clothes aside to get warm as he dug out was the rosehips, his water, and a small pot... but before he could even finish the tea, the man was hobbling towards god knows where. the uninjured boy quickly outpaced him and stopped him in his tracks.
"uh, how 'bout you put those pills down? yer lucky you didn't kill yerself the first time. i've got rosehips, i can make tea- but yer not taking any more of those." whether or not the stranger complied, zed was taking the pills for his own good- instead, he took hold of the stranger's arm, leading him back over towards the fire.
"yer clothes are soaked and yer frozen half to death. yer gonna sit down by this fire, get undressed and drink this damn tea, i won't take no for an answer. guess i should start cleanin and cookin the rabbit as well..." he shrugged, tossing a couple more pieces of wood onto the fire and started the water heating.

Lucien blinked owlishly as he found himself blocked by a scrawny kid. Before he huffed hobbling back towards the couch he'd inhabited before. He sat down heavily "kitchens that way, there's a kettle in there... one of the old types that y'can use over a fire," he grunted out. Painfully he eased off his boots and outer layer of socks, stubbornly keeping the underlayer on. They were still dry at least. Then he worked to peel off his trousers and the thermal leggings he wore underneath making a heap on the floor.
Finally, he started to work to drag off his worn coat. "that'll need fixin," he muttered to himself before he keeled over. Thankfully in his case keeling over meant he slumped down onto the couches armrest. His body had decided enough was enough. He was out for the count and upon feeling his brow it would be rather obvious he was starting to come down with a fever.
There was stacked in the corner of the upstairs area a neatly folded stack of blankets and furs that Lucien had raided or procured for himself. Making it obvious where he'd started to store things to make the cabin as cosy as possible.

well, it seemed there'd be no rush on that tea or stew after all. seeing as the man had passed out, it seemed zed would have to handle the rest. figures, he saves a man, he's stuck caring for the man. usually he wouldn't hassle with such matters, but something about this... unlucky idiot, well zed couldn't just let him go on like this. it reminded him of his father, how he drove his condition into a hole he couldn't get out of by his stubbornness and not taking his afflictions seriously. now the man's ashes hung in a bullet around zed's neck.
he hefted the other man around rather easily, laying him down properly on the couch, taking off of what was left of his clothes- well, what was still dry got left on. would it be wrong to strip an unconscious man bare? seeing some of his improperly treated wounds, he had half a mind to, just to make sure there wasn't anything he would miss- because zed was treating these immediately, especially while he wouldn't have any objections from the man. some of these were well on their way to infection, or worse. hell, he was even starting a fever. considering his exhaustion, he doubted even stitch-work would wake this man up. he set both some rosehips and dogwood berries to brew and got to work on Lucien's wounds.
outside, he heard a slight snarl from a wolf, zed peered out the window briefly, just to catch the sight of wolfbane charging at it, horns out, scaring it off with tail between his legs. with the house as cover, the deer seemed just fine out there on his own, just chilling by the bear. a real warrior, that stag. fitting for zed to have a companion just as bold and crazy as he was.
he gave a hum to himself, looking satisfied with his work on Lucien, now just covering him up to get some rest. he went to his bag for the two halves of his broken machete and his flint spearhead. the combo was usually used for starting fires, but also for help with skinning. he figured while the tea steeped, he could quickly skin and gut the rabbit, have it ready to put on the fire by the time the tea was coming off. he'd also retrieved a pot, after cutting up the rabbit meat quickly braised the rabbit in a splash of moonshine before adding water to let it stew. otherwise, seemed like things were set for the night.
"maybe a little nap wouldn't hurt." he muttered to himself. he lazily wrapped a blanket around his shoulders, he dozed off sitting on the floor, slumped against the couch Lucien slept in.
it was just his luck, he'd find some kind of stupid trouble to get tangled up in again... but it was nice, not being alone for once... it was just what zed needed.
