Once more Caleb had headed out exploring. He’d started heading out to explore his surroundings, going down a new route. He was trying to find the townsite that Bear had mentioned in their brief conversastion. However, given the misadventures – including coming across a bear that had him ducking into a trailer on his route down. Thankfully some good had come upon it, while the first deer carcass had been guarded by a wolf – causing him to detour wide, the second had an unexpected surprise.
A small tan and black shiba inu was tearing at the frozen ravaged carcass of the deer. The collar said it was owned and a smile had shown briefly as he was reminded of Lisse. Okay maybe the logical side of him would have said ‘leave it’, but still. Other than Bear this was the only other thing he’d found that had reminded him of his purpose. So, deciding to leave the meat behind he’d reached out.
The Shiba had kicked up a fuss as he found himself bodily lifted, before he’d settled into Caleb’s pack, forepaws perched on his shoulder, even starting to snuffle around and the fur edged hood. He thought he’d made it down to the townsite with no ill effects, when the fog came. Those buildings, and the wolves and white bear he’d seen were suddenly lost from view.
Instinctively he’d tensed as he looked about, moving to nock an arrow to bow string without drawing the bow as he approached. Which stood him in good stead as the warning snarl of a wolf guarding its kill. Still he was internally cursing as his first arrow went wide. The second drew a whine from the wolf as it struck. Caleb moved swiftly drawing the string back again his gaze focused. Goddamnit a second miss. He was rather glad none of his taskforce were around to see that horrendous show of archery. He managed to graze the wolf on his next shot and having had enough the wolf took off running.
Its need for food was more urgent as it turned back to charge him. Focus was the mental chide as he took aim. The gasping whine indicated he’d made his shot. Not that he had much time to celebrate as he heard the bellowing roar of a bear about to charge. shit shit shit shit shit he glanced over his shoulder seeing a shadowy form dropping to all fours. Apparently, the building had been masking him.
He didn’t hesitate as he ran for the nearest shadowy shape, hoping for a tree… or. Perfect. He shifted shoulder barging the door open and slamming it behind him feeling the building shudder as the bear crashed into the wall. Carefully he glanced around at his surroundings, his hood having fallen back in his desperate run. Which was the only thing that reminded him of his furry companion, as the shiba started licking his ear.
He'd been aware of the fog filled sky turning a vivid pink-orange and had resigned himself to having to spend night away from what he considered a safe space. So it was he started to scout the building, shifting to draw his hunting knife in preparation.
