Imagine the lights go out, never to return. Bright aurora flare across the sky, and all humanity’s technological might is laid to waste, neutralized in a kind of quiet apocalypse. Everything that has shielded humanity from the disinterested power of Mother Nature is suddenly wrenched from us, dropping us a few links down the food chain. Food and water are scarce. The roads are no longer safe. And winter approaches…

If he'd wanted to get as far away from his known areas - he'd gone and done that. He'd not even been truly thinking when that happened. Just that he'd come back to where the home had been to find it... gone. Burnt down, with all his cache of food, supplies, everything gone. He'd turned and fled into the night upon seeing that. Even now as he leaned against a tree watching the rabbits scurry around, fleeing away he could still remember the shock. The confusion as well, he knew he hadn't left anything on. Didn't understand what had happened either. It didn't make sense to him, he'd made sure that fire couldn't start.
"Worlds gone to hell, even the animals are actin' fucking weird, not acting like normal. Saw a bear on the lake that should still be asleep," he shook his head as he muttered those words to himself.
He could hear something approaching, and he readied his rifle. Could never be too careful.
fingers held tightly to the thick coat wrapped around the girl's body. her face completely enveloped by a red wool scarf, only just the bridge of her nose and eyes peek over to tiredly and warily survey the horizon. her whole body felt like it was frozen in time, barely feeling her legs move her step by step forward.
it wasn't even the coldest part of the month, winter hadn't quite hit yet, but she could feel the chill slowly making its way. the fog and clouds were getting heavier and heavier, and she could almost feel the air shifting into bad weather. she needed to find a safe place to stay, and so her mind took her to jackrabbit island.
taking another step forward, her movement was halted when the side of her eyes caught motion. she stopped dead in her tracks, hands clutched at her coat and stared at the end of a rifle. her eyes began to slowly focus on her surrounding more, heavy lashed eyes slowly blinking before moving to glance towards the other end of the rifle.
her brows began to crease together as her lips pressed together in anticipation. she had walked around unprepared, and here she might meet her end. she felt almost silly.
she held her breath and waited for the man's response.

It was a kid. Just a darn kid wandering about in this frozen hell. Not a bear or something, just one more lost abandoned kid, with probably no mother or father to look after them. A howl echoed across the lake, eerie sounding even with the bright clear day. Still, the kid wouldn't be of any harm, and the wolves were far enough away that they would equally cause no problem. Slowly he started to lower the rifle before he frowned. No, not everything was quite right. There was still the cawing of crows over by what he could only assume was once a human corpse. It looked human and had been surrounded by bottles of still useable pain meds. Either way, there'd been no meat so he'd left the bones. But there was a nearer cawing, and those crows weren't happy. He held a hand up trying to indicate to stay silent as he listened.
His rifle was raised again as well. That slow lumbering gait meant one thing. Bear. Which threw him to a quandary. If it had just been him? He'd have been either up a tree or heading for the cabin. But now there was a kid with him. The quandary didn't take long to resolve. Kid was more important than him. "Oi, kid. You listenin'? There's a cabin back that way, up the hill. Git goin'" he wasn't taking no for an answer, he'd used his rifle to gesture as to where the cabin was.
Then he set his stance, he didn't want to waste vital bullets but just maybe. He raised the aim of the rifle, firing high into the sky. He was already reloading as he heard the angry bellow of a bear charging. Well, that had and hadn't worked. Attention was on him now, but... he'd hoped the shot would have got the bear charging the other way. Hoping to at least slow the bear down he took a second shot, hearing the bellow of pain.
Then? Then he was knocked backward into the snow, instinctively he brought his hands and arms in front of his face, drawing his legs against his chest. He just hoped that darn kid had actually got the hell to the cabin as he passed out.
anticipation clawed at the girl's chest, wide dark eyes trained on the figure of the man before them. the seconds felt like years, the sound of her own heart beating heavily in her ears. as he slowly began to lower his rifle, the world around her seem to stop swimming enough for her to focus on the man. he looked worn and tired, but most of all uneasy.
she still hadn't moved or breathed much after he let up on his rifle and only managed to hold her breath even more when he raised a hand in silence. dark hued eyes began to slow look around, trying to survey what was going on. the cawing of crows catching her attention before the man pulled his rifle up once again.
her attention drifted off for a moment trying to figure out what was going exactly before it snapped towards the man as he commanded her to head towards the hill. the hill. her eyes glanced around before setting on the hill and what looked like something that could be a cabin.
her feet began to slowly move before picking up the pace, a hand reaching into her backpack to procure a distress pistol. ready to take on anything that came at her this time, even if it was the man himself.
she didn't look back as she began climbing up the hill, even when she heard the first shot. it was only until she heard the second one followed by a bellowing cry. it made her heart stop, the familiar sound. turning around and falling backwards on her butt, she glanced a few paces away to the man knocked out on the ground with the bear near by.
it must have been madness that compelled her to start running back down the hill with the pistol aimed straight towards the bear, but she didn't take the shot until she was close enough that she felt she could do some damage towards the bear.
whether she did or not, he knees buckled underneath herself as she came close enough towards the man to see the distressed state he was in. shaky hands hovered over him for a moment before placing the pistol into her pack. grabbing his hunting rifle and slinging it over her shoulder, she braced herself and began dragging the hefty man up the hill.
it felt like it took hours, and it probably did. she was grateful when she got there when she did, having missed having to drag him through light snow. once she had forced the door open and dragged him into the shelter, she began working to try to stop his bleeding with the one bandage she had on her. bandaging the worst of it all and making use of his torn driving gloves to use it patch up any wounds she could do.

At least he'd remained breathing. A groan escaped his lips as he started to come to, eyes flickering open slowly. Brow was furrowed immediately as the expected scene wasn't what met him. It was better than snow but still, he couldn't quite recollect how he got here. Also, he knew he'd passed out, so how had he bandaged himself. That was something even he couldn't manage.
Slowly he let his eyes flicker around, finally settling on the kid. That made sense he guessed. That the kid had dragged his body up here. Musta bandaged him up as well. A grateful smile flickered onto his face before he slowly started to move. He gritted his teeth, pain flashing onto his face as he struggled to a seated position. He'd tried to use his sprained wrist. That possibly hadn't been a good idea.
"'ll give y'choice, kid," his voice was warm, despite the rough edge to it.
He was also choosing to ignore that he still didn't know kids name. More important things were on his mind.
"Outside - near to the cabin I mean - saw some rosehips, plenty of fallen sticks as well. I'll head out 'n grab 'em if you prefer," it'd be a struggle as his attention was brought to the fact that both his ankles and one wrist were already very bruised and swollen. Least a sprain then.
"Else I've not fully searched the cabin. Ri'now I'd be lookin for broken wood, herbal tea.. painkillers... food as well... water," he shrugged.
It'd be her decision after all. He was used to at least surviving up here in the north, part of his job as a hunter, though things weren't normally such a big hell in a handbasket situation like now. Suddenly a thought came to the fore of his mind... something was missing. What was it again... ah..yes. Names.
"Tch. Where's me manners? 'M Lucien... thanks... I mean for haulin' my ass here," he gave another of his rare grateful smiles, a hint of regret at his own foolish actions showing through as well.
"Will... will yer be stayin? There's plenty o' room, an' I'll bed down on the couch anyway. Reckon it'd be a struggle for me to get upstairs," another sheepish smile showed at that.
Truth was he was feelin' lonely. Even as a hunter he'd normally had Max. But he weren't thinkin' of that right now.
just as she was finishing up bandaging the man, he began to stir from his unconscious state. hands instantly retracted, pulling tightly towards his body as she looked down in anticipation and curiosity. head canting to the side, letting dark brown locks to shift from the motion.
she listened intently to what he said, finding it rather reasonable. eyes trailed off towards the window, watching puffy small particles driting towards the ground. if any time were the time to go out, it was better to do while it was only lightly snowing. any harder and things would be far to difficult. looking back towards lucien as he introduced himself, she lowered her head to look at the ground. her hands fiddling with the zipper portion of her jacket.
she slowly and meekly nodded her head at his thanks in her direction. glancing out towards the window once again, she began pushing herself to her feet. scampering off towards the door, pulling the hood on her jacket up to cover her head. rosehip and sticks.
she carefully began searching around the area for those two items. nervousness ate at her mind, but she did her best to shake it off. despite spending an hour or two on searching, she couldn't find any of the rosehips, and in fact tripped scrapping her arm during the search. yet she managed to get herself a very decent pile of sticks to carry back towards the cabin.
he probably was in pain, and so maybe she could share some of her painkillers with him. she had wished she thought of it before she left, but it didn't become an issue until she couldn't find the rosehip. maybe she'd give another try.
shoving her shoulder into the door and doing her best to turn the knob to the house while still holding the pile of sticks in her arms, after a bit of struggling she managed to swing it open. tapping her feet at the entrance of the cabin before shutting it with her foot. she glanced around before finding the fireplace, making her way to place the sticks down. patting her hands together and dusting her jacket, brows began to crease as she realized she had no way of lighting the wood.
she glanced around to see if she could find lucien. moving towards him to tug on his worn jacket before pointing towards the direction of the fireplace.

Lucien had not been idle while the girl, and he still didn't know her name, had been out. Though his movements as he'd hauled himself to stand were slow, painful hobbles. He'd started trying to search the house. Each step had had him wanting to cry out in agony, but he'd managed to get through the living room at least. His hunting had found two boxes of wooden matches and a first aid box.
He'd placed these down in front of where he'd slumped onto the couch panting in reaction to the pain of exerting himself. In his mind was still the thought he'd have to track down that bear. It would be a good source of meat and fur and guts after all. His eyes were half closed again, half aware some of the wounds that had been starting to close up were bleeding again. He looked around again before he struggled back to his feet. That was one room down.
Slowly he limped into the kitchen. He wasn't sure what he'd find there but it would be worth a look around. At least that had been the plan. His ankles had a different idea and he'd only just fallen into a chair - heavily - before his legs had given way. He slammed his fist into the table resting his head down. Damnit.
He'd stayed like that only raising his head at the tugging on his coat. He was rather relieved he'd not quite fallen into his other action he normally went for if he was resting and recovering. Namely removing all his clothing to get them dry.
"Whadda you want kid?" he asked even though he still wasn't sure if she couldn't talk or wouldn't talk.
Slowly he glanced in the direction of the fireplace before slowly moving to push himself to his feet, painfully.
"Foun' some matches," he muttered before his eyes settled on newspaper. Even better. Okay so no actual up to date news - that was too much to expect after all but besides toilet paper, it was a good way of getting fires lit. "And some newspaper should help 'swell" he added on reaching for the newspaper and falling against the table with a grimace of pain.
"Can y'grab that?" he asked nodding towards the paper before slowly hobbling towards the living room - and the fireplace. Slowly he sank down onto the couch again.
"Can y'make a fire? I can tell y'how if not?" he added on leaning back against the couch back. "N I found a firs' aid kit. Were hopin to look through more rooms but.." he gave a sheepish glance.
The radio crackles to life, broadcasting only static, at the same point the tv comes to life. It's cracked screen distorts the image of the test card, which seems to be sitting behind a smoky image of the aurora and people watching it. That image was burnt permanently onto the cracked glass. Equally, all the lights in the house have flared on.
Outside, ignoring the sudden miracle of electricity appearing to surge on, the weather has indeed worsened. The wind howls and whines around the house, shaking the windows and making the wooden building creak.
hands retracted quickly to stuff themselves in the pockets of her jacket, dark eyes watching warily as to what the man would do. he was in immense pain and from how he was leaned against the table, not a great job at moving around. something was bothering him, the leg, the ankle, or the foot, she couldn't really tell. she wasn't a doctor or anything.
she followed his line of sight to see him look towards her work and then muttered. he fell against the table, probably the second time, and grimaced. lips began pulling themselves down, her body almost immediately reacting to reach for the newspaper. she could slowly hear the winds outside beginning to pick up and she knew it was going to get colder as the day waned away. fire was important at this point.
quietly without a word she began rifling through her pack to pull out a bottle of painkillers. shoving the bottle in lucien's direction before tottering off towards the fireplace. setting the newspaper down as she began to adjust her wood into a little 'house' structure.
get the newspaper all ready, she began striking the match. it easily catching on fire and began to burning the tip of her newspaper, placing it into the inner parts of the wood. her fire starting came with almost ease, her lips pulling upward to smile into the fire. the edges of her eyes creasing as she placed her hands nearby to catch the warmth.
pulling herself up to her feet, she glanced towards lucien, pulling her lips inward in a nervous habit to fix her smile into a small frown. glancing towards the archway into the other parts of the house, she glanced back and pointed towards it before making her way towards it. her steps halting once all the power suddenly turned on, causing her to jump and let out a small gasp. worriedly looking around to look at the appliances that weirdly turned on, her brows pinched together.
dark hued eyes glanced towards the window as it began to rattle, her shoulders pulling inward and hands crossing to place themselves on her chest. worry was heavily on her face, the sounds of the wind bashing against the cabin making her feel very anxious. hands tightly gripped at the red scarf around her neck, pulling it upward to try and hide her face, dark eyes lowering to look at the ground.

Lucien didn't bother to check the instructions on the painkillers, just taking a handful at once. Either way, they'd have an interesting effect on him, and he'd rather the pain be well and truly numbed. Slowly he moved to leave the kitchen pausing as the power suddenly came on, blinking in confusion. "Odd. Weren't workin' when I tried it earlier..." he muttered more to himself as he glanced about. Slowly though he moved himself to sit on the couch.
"Kid, any sticks spare... if you look in me pack," he gestured to it with his good hand "there'll be another bandage," he was starting to work to ease the boots off, wincing in pain. He knew he had to splint both his legs, and as he pulled his socks off he was checkin the injury for any signs it were more then a sprain. He didn't think he could walk if he had broken his ankles mind but it was always good to be careful.
"I'll splint me legs, and me arm, n then if you wan' I can tell you a story?" he was trying to keep her distracted from the roar of the wind. He wasn't sure if it was workin but he liked telling stories. "I'd offer t'play guitar but I reckon that'll be pretty darn useless," he shrugged.
He'd take anything, any signal, but equally, he was quite happy to just ramble on for two. He'd always been told he was a good talker. At least that's what Soma had said. Shame he'd been too much of a city slicker. Gone haring back t'Florida or wherever it was. Stupid idiot. Still, he hoped the idiot had got back safely. And was safe. Wherever the fuck he was, in whatever stinkin shithole of a city he was in.
"Y'can help if you want... also may want to get any clothes off that got wet, don't worry, 'm gay," rather blunter than normal and he couldn't help the laughter that escaped.
dark hued eyes slid to look towards the other only when he began to speak, tightly keeping her hold on her scarf as she listened silently. eyes trailing towards his pack at his request, pulling her attention away only to look at the window as it rattled harshly again. pressing her lips and furrowing her brows further, she willed herself to not focus on the outside storm. walking over to take a bandage from lucien's pack and then grabbing a stick that hadn't quite catch on fire too much. blowing to put out a small flame on it before dropping both right next to him.
her hands returned to tightly grip at her scarf , her eyes widening at his very blunt reasoning for why it would be okay for her to just undress. she gave him a rather unconvinced look before turning on her heel to make her way into another room. gathering all the supplies in the area was her first priority right now, but-
as she thought about it, some of her clothes was still wet. it made it hard to walk around and she didn't particularly want to catch a cold. she paused in her steps and turned around. it would be cold for a little bit, but if she kept moving around she'd warm up. the fire should also help to warm up the house as well.
she uncurled her red scarf, placing it near the fire to dry quicker and then began pulling her jacket off. setting it also down and then deposited her butt onto the ground to star pulling her shoes off, glancing over her should to give a wary look in lucien's direction. a look as if she was hinting at him that she didn't want him watching her. he could be some bold face lying creep for all she knew, but she needed to get these wet cloths off.
yanking one boot off and then the other, she placed them down on the ground. standing up to pull her the bottom of her sweater all the way down as she could and then shimmied out of her pants. dropping them on the ground and readjusting her sweater to hide as much of her butt as she could.
she gave another glance towards him to make sure he wasn't watching and then crossed her arms over her chest as she began snooping around the house to see what she could gather. maybe something she could use as a weapon for just in case.

Lucien watched her quietly nodding his thanks as she passed him the stick. "Thanks, kid," he stated calmly before he carefully worked to use his hunting knife to cut it down to size. It was hard work with an arm out and he still found himself grimacing but he managed it. Carefully he continued on his task shrugging his way out of his damp clothes and nudging them towards the fire to dry.
He glanced just checking where the kid was, leaving his thermal underlayer on at least before he just settled himself down in front of the fire on the couch. "I'd advise not goin' out there kid..." he added on as he listened to the howl of the wind. The crackle of the fire and the warmth was slowly lulling him off to sleep.
"I shoul' go out once the weathers lift'd. Go fin'...go...fin..." his eyes were closed as he dozed off to sleep.
lips pursed as dark hued eyes glanced around the area, carefully surveying to see if they could identify anything useful. she paused for a moment to frown as the man lucien chided her about going outside. that was the last thing on her mind, especially since she wasn't wearing much clothes. she'd freeze herself to death, and dying wasn't on her top priority right now.
she moved quietly from one room to the other, doing her best to find anything of use. finding a few articles of clothing, one can of corn (stuff in a drawer for whatever reason), a sewing kit, tool box, and a hunting knife.
returning to the main room to pile her finds, she caught sight of the sleeping man canted her head in curiosity. placing a hand near her neck, she glanced around for a moment and caught sight of the curtain. reaching and grabbing it, she yanked the thing down. undoing the metal pieces attached and shuffled over to place the curtain on lucien.
shuffling towards the fireplace, she sat herself down pulling her knees close to her body. wrapping her arms around them, she laid her chin on top of her knees and quietly watched the fire before being lulled to sleep herself. collapsing onto her side to curl up near the fire.
