Ukiuk pranced tugging at the lead rope challengingly. The fiery bay appaloosa pony was bored of being on the move. He wanted to settle now. Atalitaaq was half slumped on Kingkiyuuk's back. The fog enfolded itself around the travelers, the biting damp cold causing the clothing to dampen, as the ghost gray blanket slowly shifted, receding back to reveal trees and the stumps of trees.
The whole world seemed to have faded away into a world of strange gray forms, as the fog fought to maintain its hold, relinquishing each new form like a lover slipping off a silken sheet. A desperate bleat escaped as Ukiuk startled. A rabbit had belted out the veiling fog, running Helter Skelter atop the deepening snow. The noise of its startled flight fading into nothingness just after its ghostly form had faded back into the shrouds.
The warning snarl of a wolf was the next sound to break through the strange tranquilness enforced upon the world. That was enough to make the traveler pause, drawing the older chestnut to a halt, eyes scanning intently to try and see where the wolf was stood, looking for the shadowy form. That shape over there.. he couldn't tell if it was a wolf guarding its kill or a pile of rocks. Either way, though he reined the chestnut to give the shape a wide berth, the chestnut limping slightly as ever on its foreleg.
Finally ahead of the strange rag tag family of fawn, and the 6 wolf pups now snuggly in the saddlebags made of their mothers fur, was shelter of some sorts. A hunting blind slowly emerged from the thickening fog. Ukiuk hastened his pace eager to be free of his burdens, and even the chestnut seemed to speed up.
There was no point blundering through the fog looking for better shelter. Better to remain here.
